Gert Verhulst and Bart De Wever surprise Jan Smit at the Sportpaleis

March 11, 2018

Jan Smit celebrates 20 years of his career at the Sportpaleis, with 13,000 fans, a gold record, and a career award.

After sold-out arenas and theater concerts, singer Jan Smit performed solo for the first time on Saturday evening at the Antwerp Sportpaleis. "A dream come true, especially when you experience it with 13,000 enthusiastic fans, colleagues, and guest artists," he said after the highly successful "Jan & Alleman" concert. This concert marked the festive conclusion of the Flemish part of the '20 years of Jan Smit' anniversary year. Jan sang his hits and duets with guest artists André Hazes, De Romeo's, Lindsay, Ianthe Tavernier, Christoff, and K3. It was an evening full of surprises, both for the audience and for Jan Smit, because, to his own surprise, Gert Verhulst presented him with a gold record for selling more than 10,000 copies of the new 'Jan & Alleman' anniversary CD. Mayor of Antwerp Bart De Wever went one step further and presented Jan with a special career award for selling more than 500,000 CDs in Belgium. In the fall of 2019, Jan Smit will go on a theater tour with a new CD. He will start on September 27, 2019, at the Capitole in Ghent. He will also perform at Kursaal Oostende on October 4, 2019, at the Ethias Theater in Hasselt on October 25, 2019, and the tour will end at the Stadsschouwburg in Antwerp on November 3, 2019. Tickets for 'Jan Smit Live in Flanders' can be ordered at www.ticketkopen.eu or by telephone on 070/345.345 (max. €0.30/min).

"Good evening, Sportpaleis," said Jan Smit as he opened his big anniversary concert at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp on Saturday evening, March 10. It was just after eight o'clock and the start of an unforgettable evening for the popular folk singer. Together with 13,000 fans, he celebrated the closing party of the Flemish anniversary year "20 years of Jan Smit." At the age of 11, Jantje Smit scored a hit with "Ik zing dit lied voor jou alleen" (I sing this song for you alone), a song he dedicated to his grandmother at the time. It was also Jan's first number one hit in Belgium, so it was no coincidence that he started his Sportpaleis concert on Saturday evening with that song. Over the past 20 years, Jan Smit has become one of the most popular singers. The many songs from his gold and platinum albums were literally sung along by 'everyone and their brother' during his concert.

Goosebumps
The first goosebumps moment came when Jan sang "Jij bent daar" in a duet with star performer and revelation Ianthe Tavernier. "It's wonderful how our voices blend. This was a real treat," said Ianthe afterwards. André Hazes created great chemistry when he sang 'Recht uit m'n hart' with Jan and then captivated the crowd with 'Leef'. During the first part of the concert, Jan sang 'Cupido', 'Stilte in de storm' (Silence in the storm), 'Laura' and, in a duet with Lindsay, 'De glimlach van een kind' (A child's smile). For the East Flemish singer, it was officially her first performance since becoming a mother at the end of last year. Her daughter Lisa-Marie enjoyed her mother's first performance at the Sportpaleis with Uncle Jan backstage.

Gold and career award
Before Jan played "Mijn gitaar," Gert Verhulst walked onto the stage with a gold award. "Your new anniversary CD 'Jan & Alleman' has already sold more than 10,000 copies, and for that I may present you with this gold record. Congratulations!"

Jan gratefully accepted the precious metal, and while the fans and press were busy taking photos, Antwerp Mayor Bart De Wever appeared unannounced on stage: "Jan Smit, I have the honor of presenting you with this exceptional career award, because over the past 20 years you have sold more than 500,000 CDs."

K3
Before Jan performed a Bryan Adams medley with songs chosen by Radio 2 listeners and dedicated "1 minuut met jou" to his late manager and discoverer Jaap Buijs, he sang the number one duet "Zingen, lachen, dansen" with De Romeo's.

The moment that Jan and his family, who were also present at the Sportpaleis, had been looking forward to was the appearance of the girls from K3. "They were already thrilled at home that Hanne, Marthe, and Klaasje had agreed to perform at my anniversary concert," said Jan. Together with K3, he sang "Banger hart" (Fearful Heart), and afterwards, the ladies also performed a medley of their greatest K3 hits.

Climax
After De Romeo's and K3, the party atmosphere continued to build when Jan welcomed his KLUBBB3 colleague and friend Christoff. Together they sang the aptly titled "Echte vrienden" (Real Friends). Christoff then rocked the stage with "Sweet Caroline" and ended with "Het leven danst sirtaki" (Life Dances Sirtaki).

At the end of the 'Jan & Alleman' concert, the maestro put the finishing touches to his work and, together with his live band, performed 'Vrienden voor het leven', 'Als de morgen is gekomen' and 'Als de nacht verdwijnt' as the perfect finale. The 13,000 fans were unanimous in their praise: "It was fantastic. A unique evening. We're so glad we were there!"

's new theater tour Jan Smit: "I thoroughly enjoyed my anniversary year in Flanders, which concluded with this unique concert at the Sportpaleis. A tour close to the fans, which I love, by the way."
