Jan Smit, then still known as Jantje Smit, released "Van Goes tot Purmerend" back in 1999. It remains one of his most requested songs, so Smit decided to re-record it with the folk singer of the moment: Marco Schuitmaker.
The idea came about after Jan and Marco met:
"The plan to breathe new life into 'Van Goes tot Purmerend' had been around for a while, but I hadn't yet figured out exactly how. Until Marco asked me if I wanted to do this song with him. Then all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. I gave Marco free rein to come up with a new arrangement. He managed to create a new style, which I'm incredibly happy with." According to Jan Smit.
Jan and Marco performed live on Radio 538 this morning, singing "Van Goes tot Purmerend." The single is now available to stream and download, and the music video can be viewed on Jan Smit's YouTube channel.
