Jan Smit received the Edison Pop Oeuvre Award 2024 during tonight's live broadcast of Humberto on RTL4. He was presented with the award by his ten-year-old son, Senn Smit. Jury chairman and guest Daniel Dekker praised his oeuvre and his enormous contribution, from an early age, to Dutch music and its artists.
Jan Smit has been in the business for thirty years and has made a major contribution to Dutch music with his extensive oeuvre. Not only as a singer, but also as a composer and songwriter. He has 34 albums to his name, 76 gold titles, 16 platinum titles, and at least 20 number 1 hits. In 2006, Jan Smit received an Edison Award for his album Gewoon Jan Smit.
The jury report:
The winner of the Edison Pop Oeuvre Award 2024 began singing in the boys' choir "De Zangertjes van Volendam." As a ten-year-old, he was discovered in the musical village by members of the group BZN. They wrote his first hit, which came in at number 1 in the Top 40 out of nowhere, a historic event. Never before had an artist or group achieved this in the Netherlands.
Due to labor legislation, his career initially took off abroad, and in 2001 he received the Buma Export Prize for best-selling Dutch artist abroad. A few years later, his own reality soap on Dutch television made him hugely popular, and with apparent ease but full conviction, he still sticks to his own course, always recognizable to a large audience. There are always new plans, there is always new energy. He has been writing and producing his own music for years with his own team and performs in theaters, pop venues, and stadiums.
These new plans also benefit others, with dozens of hits being written for various artists and formats developed to keep Dutch music culture visible on television. His involvement in the Eurovision Song Contest, as a committee member, presenter, and commentator, contributed to the Netherlands' first victory in 44 years. "His" TV show "Beste Zangers" is the most popular music program, now also across the border.
His passion for sharing with others and touching his audience always comes first. He uses his talents in countless ways and seeks out his best moments, often learned from and improved upon by his sadly deceased manager Jaap Buijs.
There is a fleet named after him, he has his own restaurant, his own record label and recording studio, he has appeared in a number of films and TV series, has been an ambassador for SOS Children's Villages for 25 years, was chairman of FC Volendam and is an officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau. He is still very well known in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and his fame in the Netherlands is unprecedented. When he breaks up with his girlfriend, the ANP sends out a news alert and the prime minister interrupts the meeting in the House of Representatives.
The jury notes that his oeuvre now includes nearly 80 gold and platinum awards, supported by more than 20 number 1 hits. A unique artist who has been making music with great success for thirty years before the ageof 40: the jury therefore awards the Edison Pop Oeuvre Prize 2024 to Jan Smit.
