Nick, Simon, and Kees travel to England for a documentary about The Beatles.

For a new adventure as documentary makers, Nick, Simon, and Kees immerse themselves in the lives of their shared musical heroes: The Beatles. To do so, they embark on their own Magical Mystery Tour and travel to England to discover and capture the story of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. What is it that has made The Beatles leave such an indelible mark? And what is the mystery behind their popular songs that continues to influence contemporary musicians?

The music of The Beatles is considered to be the most important and influential music to emerge in the 1960s. Songs such as "Let It Be," "Here Comes The Sun," and "Hey Jude" are still played frequently today. Nick, Simon, and Kees meet people who were close to the band members and gain an interesting insight into the life of one of the world's most popular bands. They start their journey in Liverpool, the city where John, Paul, Ringo, and George grew up and took their first musical steps together.

Among other places, they visit Strawberry Field in Liverpool, which was a Salvation Army orphanage during John Lennon's childhood and now houses an exhibition about John Lennon. In the song 'Strawberry Fields Forever', he sings about this place as a fond childhood memory, where he often played with the children from the orphanage. Here they meet Julia Baird, John's half-sister, who is now honorary director of Strawberry Field, where she has started a project to offer disadvantaged young people opportunities in the labor market. And although Julia really only wants to talk about that, Kees uses all his charm to coax stories about her famous brother out of her.

Just like The Beatles, Nick, Kees, and Simon travel from Liverpool to London. The city that took the group's music to even greater heights. In London, they meet Tony Bramwell, among others. He has known The Beatles since childhood and later becomes their road manager. If anyone knows The Beatles inside out, it's him. They meet him at Twickenham Film Studios. Several films have been shot at this location, and iconic songs for their latest album were created here. Fittingly, this is also the last stop for our Volendammers. But not before they conclude this special journey musically with the various guests they met during their own Magical Mystery Tour.

Nick, Simon, and Kees: The Beatles – Magical Mystery Tour, starting May 18 at 9:30 p.m. on AVROTROS on NPO 1.
