Today sees the release of 3JS's new single, entitled "Wat Je Mist" (What You Miss). The hopeful song is a collaboration with the ZO! Gospel Choir and is the second single from the album De Aard Van Het Beest(The Nature of the Beast), which will be released on May 10.
The song "Wat Je Mist" is also the second song released by the Volendam trio with their new band member Robin Küller, who succeeded guitarist Jan de Witte last year. A spontaneous musical idea from the 28-year-old newcomer resulted in the spring-fresh "Wat Je Mist," on which 3JS blends its own characteristic sound with both gospel and hip-hop influences. 3JS therefore asked the ZO! Gospel Choir to sing along on the song. "Because it's a spiritually-tinged text, a gospel choir is quite appropriate," concludes singer Jan Dulles.
The motto of "Wat Je Mist" is to look ahead and let the past rest. "You're starting a new life," Dulles says of the comforting lyrics. "Whether it's letting go of a relationship, your job, or Jan de Witte, you've made your choice, so you shouldn't look back with melancholy. Like, 'Gosh, I really miss that.' You have to try to forget it completely and go for gold. That's the message." Previously, 3JS sang the U2 classic "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" with this gospel choir on De Wereld Draait Door.
The group spent an unusually long time working on this single. The idea came about in the middle of the Christmas tour. "Robin and I went on vacation after that, but Jaap continued working on it in the studio after the tour. He spent another three weeks on it." Jaap Kwakman was really puzzling over it, he explains. "Normally, our songs start with a verse or a chorus, and then maybe a bridge is added, so the foundation is there. Now it was like building a house and starting with the attic window."
Last year, the new lineup of 3JS released the single "De Toekomst" (The Future), which will also be featured on their twelfth studio album, De Aard Van Het Beest (The Nature of the Beast). The album, which will be released in May, was produced entirely by the band itself. Last night marked the start of the De Aard Van Het Beest theater tour, which will take 3JS across the country. The tour ends on Saturday, May 30, in Spijkenisse.
