Today sees the release of Nick & Simon's new single, "Jarenlange Maanden" (Years of Months). It is the second single from the album "NSG," released in November, which stands for Nick & Simon & Garfunkel. The concept album features 12 Dutch-language songs inspired by the sound of Simon & Garfunkel.
Jarenlange Maanden (Years of Months)
NSG recorded at the renowned Henson Studios in L.A. The recording of Jarenlange Maanden was based on the rhythm section's approach to Simon & Garfunkel's well-known Cecilia. The American duo was the first to dare to bang and drum on random objects, and all the musicians who were there at the time joined in, creating a unique sound that was totally different from a traditional drum kit. This was now also done under the direction of producer Jay Newland in the case of "Jarenlange Maanden." For example, drummer Bernie Dresel hit a drumhead still wrapped in plastic with a banana. Someone else drummed on the back of a guitar. Simon simply clapped his hands and Nick tapped on his guitar case. That sound was looped and ultimately became characteristic of the sound of the new single.
Paulinho da Costa
The percussionist who may not be familiar to everyone by name, but who added his distinctive sound to many thousands of well-known hits, is Paulinho da Costa. From Madonna to all of Michael Jackson's recordings, he played with great feeling in an almost magical way. This is also the case on "Jarenlange Maanden." The entire process is extensively documented in the Amazon Prime documentary "Nick & Simon in L.A."
“Jarenlange Maanden” was written by Nick & Simon together with 3JS guitarist Jaap Kwakman. As a bonus, the album “NSG” includes an extra disc with Simon & Garfunkel covers beautifully recorded at Wisseloord.
