Nick & Simon traveling through Malawi

Amersfoort / Blantyre, November 26 – Last week, Nick & Simon traveled through Malawi with Edukans to see with their own eyes how education changes children's lives. The singing duo has been ambassadors for the educational development organization for almost 10 years.

Nick & Simon visited one of the 30 primary schools where Edukans is working to improve education. This is desperately needed. The school dropout rate in Malawi is enormous: only a third of children make it to grade 8. Overcrowded classrooms with more than 100 children per room and a dire lack of well-trained teachers mean that the quality of education is poor.

And what if you are born a girl in Malawi – one of the poorest countries in the world? Nick & Simon experience this for a moment when they cycle home with Funny. Many girls live far away from school. The journey takes hours and is unsafe. Parents therefore keep their daughters at home. Edukans gives girls a school bike, enabling hundreds of girls in Malawi to go to school after all. Nick & Simon: "We cycle along a sandy road full of potholes, with cars racing past us. It's hard to imagine that Funny used to do this every day on foot. It took her two hours. Thanks to Edukans, Funny also receives a scholarship. This smart girl touched us with her story, and we left her village with a lump in our throats. Funny will make it!

About Edukans
At school, you learn much more than reading, writing, and arithmetic. You learn to stand up for yourself. You develop your talents. What you learn at school stays with you forever. Worldwide, 264 million children and young people do not attend school or drop out prematurely. That is why Edukans works in developing countries to provide the best possible education for children and young people. Thanks to the support of our donors, volunteers, and participants in the National Postcode Lottery, we give them the opportunity of a lifetime.
